All staff who work with and support children, young people and their families and carers.

Learning pathway

Before attending this course participants must have attended Safeguarding Children – A Shared Responsibility.

Course aims

To increase awareness of the impact of domestic abuse on adults, children and young people.

Course objectives
  • To develop an understanding of the effects of domestic abuse on adults, children and young people
  • To develop an understanding of the impact of domestic abuse on the parent/ child relationship
  • To gain knowledge of how to offer appropriate help and support to adults, children and young people who are or have experienced domestic abuse
Learning outcomes

Day 1

By the end of the course participants will have -

  • examined their attitudes and understanding of domestic abuse.
  • explored the forms domestic abuse can take and the contexts in which it can occur.
  • examined some of the myths and assumptions around domestic abuse.
  • looked at what services and support are available locally.
  • examined their own practice and issues in the workplace in response to domestic abuse.
  • examined agencies responsibilities in relation to risk identification, assessment and management.
  • explained some of the lessons learned from the risk identification, assessment and management process.
  • described the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) process and understand the guidancearound this.

Day 2

By the end of the course participants will have -

  • developed an understanding of the effects of domestic abuse on children and young people.
  • developed an understanding of the impact of domestic abuse on the parent/ child relationship.
  • gained knowledge of how to offer appropriate help and support to adults, children and young people who are orhave experienced domestic abuse
