What is mental health - How to access support and thresholds brought to you by the Thrive Hull Partnership (Teams) Tuesday 17 June, 2pm to 3pm

Mental health is often viewed clinically through biology and psychology, but it is fundamentally shaped by society as a social construct. Cultural norms, history, and societal expectations influence how we define and respond to mental health; what is seen as illness in one culture may be valued in another. Language around mental health reflects shifting societal attitudes. Social factors like class, gender, and ethnicity impact stress levels, resource access, and stigma, affecting diagnosis and treatment. Recognizing mental health as a social construct helps challenge stigma, promote equity, and shift focus from individual blame to societal change. This session explores mental health within this context and outlines available services and when specialist care is necessary
